Practical advice
Choosing an intruder alarm
Five things to discuss before choosing equipment for your home or workplace.
1. Map your everyday routines
Think about the first person in, the last person out and whether parts of the property need protection while others are occupied. Include staff, family members and other authorised users.
2. Explain the layout and access points
Share drawings or describe entrances, outbuildings and areas you particularly want to protect. Mention renovation plans so the proposed installation can take them into account.
3. Discuss pets and overnight use
Tell us where pets move and whether you want to set parts of the alarm overnight. These details affect detector choice, positioning and how the system will be used.
4. Separate useful features from essential requirements
App access, notifications and monitoring serve different purposes. Ask exactly what the proposed system supports, what depends on connectivity and what has an ongoing charge. Provide any written insurer requirements before the design is agreed.
5. Think beyond installation day
Ask about user instruction, maintenance and how changes will be handled. A system should remain manageable when users, routines or the layout change.
